Fuengirola

Fuengirola stretches along 8 km of the Mediterranean and its excellent climate and the hospitality of its people make it the ideal place for rest, peace and quiet. Its beaches fly the European Union Blue Flag by dint of the excellent quality of its water and sands which have the peculiarity of being fully integrated in the urban centre, enabling the visitor to have both the beach and the best services to hand. Fuengirola has a magnificent promenade, the balcony of the city overlooking the sea.

This urban space has the privilege of being one of the best in the Mediterranean not only by dint of its length – over seven kilometres – but also its attractiveness, uniqueness and the quality of its services. The promenade recently underwent remodelling and enhancement work to modernise and adapt it, thereby converting it into one of the most visited areas in Fuengirola owing to the peace and quiet deriving from its relaxing walks on the seaside and its invigorating breeze. Fuengirola - also known as the White Town because of its cleanliness and whiteness as well as being an emblematic tourist centre – is the gateway of the Costa del Sol to the more typical, traditional Andalusia.

History: The origins of the foundation of Fuengirola date back to the Phenician colonisation, though it should not be forgotten that it was formerly a Bastulo settlement. On a hill on the right bank of the River Fuengirola its old Castle of Punic or Roman origin stands majestically, later remodelled in the 10th century by Caliph Abderrahman III. The Romans called the city Suel as the star of the same name can be clearly seen from its castle. In the 8th century it was conquered by the Arabs who called it Sujayl, a name which was to remain until its reconquest in 1485 by the troops of the Catholic Sovereigns. In the 7th century the name of Sujayl was changed to Fuengirola because of the bolicheros (fishermen) of the Genovese called “gironas” who visited these shores owing to its abundance of fish.
